Hydrostatically driven

A travel motor is hydrostatically driven, which means that the power of the motor is controlled by oil pressure. It's not a combustion engine like the main engine, in other words. The main pump in the excavator ensures the correct oil pressure, which activates the drive motor.

Travel motor and final drive

Every crawler crane has two travel motors: one for each side. Both sides also have a final drive. The travel motor transmits its forces to this final drive.

The gears in the final drive ensure that the forces are amplified. In this way, there is always enough power to set the machine in motion. Of course, this system also ensures that the forward speed is reduced. So, although it's also called a gearbox, it actually slows things down.

Maintenance of a Liebherr travel motor
